Two Christmas Lesson Ideas (with fun Object Lessons) using concepts from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Lesson 1. “Come Unto Christ This Christmas”

Use these posters with the lesson

1. Opening Thought/Scripture (5 min)

Read Luke 2:10–11 “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”

Ask: Why do you think the angels called it “good tidings of great joy” for “all people”?

2. Activity with Posters (15 min)

Hold up the Nativity side of the poster.

Ask: What does this picture remind you about the beginning of Christ’s life?

Why is His humble birth significant for us today?

Then hold up the side with Christ reaching out His hand.

Ask: What does this image teach about who Jesus is now?

How does this connect to the baby in the manger?

Emphasize that Christ came not just to be born, but to reach out to us, lift us, and save us. Christmas is about His invitation to “come unto me.”

3. Small Group Discussion (10 min)

Divide into small groups. Have them answer:

How can we “receive His hand” this Christmas?

What is one way we can invite others to feel His love?

Give each group a minute to share their favorite idea with everyone.

4. Object Lesson Idea 1 (Optional)

Bring two simple objects:

A small manger (or picture of one)

A handprint cutout (or glove)

Explain:
The manger represents His coming.

The hand represents His invitation.

Together, they show the full purpose of Christmas... He came for us.

Alternate Object Lesson Idea (Optional)
Bring a beautifully wrapped gift box (you can even put a small treat or note inside).

Show the gift to the class and ask: What do you think is inside? (Take a few guesses.)

Open it up and reveal a simple object or message that says: “The greatest gift is Jesus Christ.”

Explain that at Christmas, we sometimes get caught up in gifts and traditions, but the true gift is Christ Himself! His birth and His invitation to follow Him.

Teaching Point:

The Nativity poster reminds us of the beginning of the gift, Christ’s humble birth.

The Christ reaching His hand poster reminds us of what the gift means today, His ongoing invitation to walk with Him.

The Savior’s life is the gift that keeps giving eternally if we choose to receive it. The atonement is the greatest gift any of us will ever receive because with it, we can return to live with our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

5. Closing Testimony & Journal Prompt (5 min)

Invite the class to write down:
“How will I take Christ’s hand this Christmas?”

Close with your testimony of Christ’s birth, life, and Atonement.

This way, the posters aren’t just decorations, they’re the teaching centerpiece to show that Christmas is both about remembering His humble birth and responding to His personal invitation today.

Roll each poster and tie a bow around each with twine or ribbon and give to each person in your class. This poster will remind you to take Christ's hand and walk with Him this year.

Lesson 2.  “Standing in Holy Places with Christ”

Use these posters with the lesson

1. Opening Scripture (5 min)

Read Doctrine & Covenants 87:8 “Stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come.”

Ask: What do you think it means to stand in a “holy place”?

2. Using the Posters (15 min)

Hold up the Holy Family (Nativity) poster.

Ask: How was the stable, though humble, made holy?

What made it sacred even though it was simple?

Emphasize: It wasn’t the place itself, but who was there. Christ’s presence made it holy.

Hold up the Christ Reaching Out His Hand poster.

Ask: What does this image suggest about where holiness can be found today?

How can we feel His presence and protection in our everyday lives?

Emphasize: Holy places aren’t always buildings, they can be our homes, schools, or even our own hearts when we invite Christ in.

3. Group Activity (10 min)

Give each person a notecard. Ask them to write down:

One “holy place” they already have (temple, church, bedroom, family prayer, etc.).

One “holy place” they want to create (a scripture study spot, a friendship circle free of gossip, their locker at school with uplifting reminders, etc.).

Then invite volunteers to share what they wrote.

4.   Object Lesson: The Umbrella of Protection

Bring an umbrella to class.

Open the umbrella and ask: What does an umbrella do? (It protects us from rain, snow, or sun.)

Explain that standing in holy places is like standing under the Lord’s umbrella of protection. As long as we stay close to Him, we are spiritually safe, even when storms are all around us.

Step outside the umbrella and show how quickly you’d get wet if it were raining. Explain that leaving holy places (physically or spiritually) leaves us vulnerable to temptation and discouragement.

Teaching Point:

Holy places are created by being where the Spirit can dwell, in temples, chapels, homes, and in our own hearts.

Standing under Christ’s “umbrella” is choosing to stay close to Him through prayer, scriptures, and obedience.

Tie-in with Posters:

The Nativity poster: Even in a simple stable, those who gathered there stood in a holy place because they were with Christ. Holiness can exist even in a humble stable, but it required hearts ready to welcome Him.

The Christ reaching out His hand poster: He invites us to stand with Him — under His protection — so we are never alone in the storm.

5. Closing Journal Prompt & Challenge (5 min)

Ask them to write:
“Where can I make my own holy place this week?”

Challenge: Pick one spot at home, at school, or in daily life to dedicate as a “holy place”  by filling it with prayer, scripture, or kindness.

Close with testimony that Christ makes any place holy when we stand with Him.

Roll each poster and tie a bow around each with twine or ribbon and give to each person in your class. This poster will help create a "holy place" where you hang it because it will remind you of the Savior.

I hope you enjoy these lesson ideas. Please use the spirit to adapt these ideas to the needs of your class.
